The Local History of Merrigum, Victoria

Merrigum is a small town located in the Goulburn Valley region of Victoria, Australia. The town has a rich history dating back to the 1800s when settlers first arrived in the area. Today, Merrigum is a vibrant community of around 400 people who work together to maintain the town's unique identity and heritage.

Early Settlement

The traditional owners of the land on which Merrigum now sits were the Yorta Yorta people. European settlers began to arrive in the area in the mid-1800s, attracted by the fertile land and the promise of goldfields nearby. Merrigum was originally known as "Black Swamp," named after the wetlands that once covered the area.

The first permanent European settlers arrived in the area in the 1870s. They set up farms and vineyards, and the town began to grow. By the turn of the century, Merrigum had a post office, a school, and a railway station. The town continued to expand in the early 1900s, with the construction of a butter factory and a flour mill.
